Expecting Your First Baby? Install Under-Cabinet Lighting In Your Kitchen!

Posted on: 12 April 2022

When expecting a baby, there are so many things to do to prepare for having a newborn in the house. Many people who are becoming parents for the first time don't realize the importance of having dim lighting throughout the home, particularly in the kitchen. If the only lighting in your kitchen is the overhead lighting, consider having under-cabinet lighting installed. Here's why your family will benefit from having under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen and how to install them.

Use Under-Cabinet Lighting as Nightlights

Currently, you may have little to no choice but to turn on the bright overhead light in the kitchen when you're making a midnight snack. You could plug in a nightlight into the wall under the cabinets but then you have to be careful to not place anything on the counter in front of the light to block it. With under-cabinet lighting installed, you can prepare your midnight snack now and your baby's bottles later without turning on the bright overhead lights. If you install under-cabinet lighting that has different intensities, you can also use it to help you read the fine print on packaging labels and directions. Use the lowest setting as your nightlight and the highest setting to help you see the hard-to-see items better, such as when inspecting a Binky for dirt after it's been dropped onto the floor and rinsed off.

Hire an Electrician to Install Under-Cabinet Lighting

While there are kits available at the large home improvement stores, it's a good idea to hire an electrician to install the lighting. That way, the lighting can be safely hardwired to the electrical wiring, and you won't have to deal with any dangling electrical cords or using an electrical outlet. Hardwired lighting will last longer than the battery-powered lighting that can be found in various home improvement stores. You'll be able to keep the lighting on as a nightlight throughout the entire night instead of constantly having to replace batteries in the battery-powdered units. You can also have the electrician install a timer and/or a motion detector to control the under-cabinet lighting, which will be nice to have when you're half-asleep in the middle of the night when your newborn needs a bottle warmed up or you need to prepare a fever-reducing medication to give to your baby. Speak with your electrician for more ideas on how to utilize your new under-cabinet lighting.
